Software tools, cloud hosting, design apps, advertising platforms: if your business sells or works online, a surprising amount of its spending happens through recurring card payments. Keeping track of them all, and keeping them under control, is harder than it sounds.
Virtual cards can make it much simpler. Instead of putting every subscription and ad account on a single company card, you can give each one its own card with its own limit, and freeze any of them in seconds.
This guide explains how virtual cards work, why they suit business subscriptions and online ads so well, how to set them up sensibly, and what to keep in mind when you use them.
What a virtual card is
A virtual card works like a normal payment card, with a card number, expiry date and security code, but it lives in an app rather than on a piece of plastic. Your business uses it for online payments, such as software, ad platforms and suppliers that take cards.
With Vav, cards are Visa virtual cards. You top them up from your business’s account balance and spend what you load. There is no credit and no interest, so you cannot run up a debt on the card.
Why virtual cards suit subscriptions and ads
Subscriptions and ad spending share a few traits: they recur, they can grow quietly, and they are easy to lose track of. Virtual cards address each of these.
One card per purpose
You can create multiple cards. Many businesses use one card per software subscription, one card per ad account, or one card per team, such as the ads team. When a charge appears, you know straight away what it is for.
Limits that match your budget
Each card can have its own spending limit. If your business plans to spend a certain amount on a campaign or a tool, set the limit to match, and the card will not go beyond it.
Freeze in seconds
If a free trial is about to roll into a paid plan, or a campaign is overspending, you can freeze the card instantly in the Vav app. Unfreeze it just as quickly when you are ready.
Contain the damage if details leak
If a merchant suffers a data breach, only the card you used there is exposed. You can freeze that card without touching the others.
How it compares with other ways to pay
Here is a broad, qualitative comparison of common ways to pay for subscriptions and ads.
| Approach | Control over spending | If details are exposed | Credit involved |
|---|---|---|---|
| One company card for everything | Hard to separate charges | All payments affected | Depends on the card |
| Separate virtual cards with limits | Clear limit per card | Freeze just one card | No, with Vav you spend what you load |
| Paying each time by bank transfer | Manual, one payment at a time | Not applicable | No |
Setting up your cards sensibly
A little planning at the start saves a lot of tidying up later.
Name each card clearly
Give each card a name that tells you exactly what it is for, such as the tool, the ad account or the team that uses it. That makes your transaction history, and your bookkeeping, much easier to read.
Set limits slightly above your expected spend
A limit that is too tight can cause a subscription renewal or an ad charge to fail. Set it to what you expect to spend, with a little room, and review it regularly.
Use the right billing address
Many merchants check the billing address when you add a card. With Vav, use the billing address shown with your card details in the app, exactly as it appears there.
Keep enough balance loaded
Because you spend what you load, a renewal will not go through if there is not enough on the card. Top up from your business’s account balance before big renewals or campaign launches. Any fees are shown in the Vav app before you confirm.
Staying safe with online payments
Virtual cards give you strong tools, but good habits still matter.
- Review charges regularly. Look through each card’s transactions and cancel anything you no longer use.
- Cancel with the merchant. Freezing a card stops new payments, but you should still cancel the subscription itself.
- Never share one-time codes. Vav will never ask for your password or one-time codes. Anyone who does is not Vav.
- Be wary of urgent messages. Messages claiming your ad account or subscription will be shut down unless you pay immediately are a common scam.

Funding your cards
Your cards draw on your business’s Vav account balance, for example money overseas clients or marketplaces paid you by bank transfer. Our guides on how businesses in Pakistan get paid by overseas clients and what a virtual bank account is explain how money gets into Vav in the first place.
To get a card, your business will need to be verified. If you are not sure what that involves, see what KYC and KYB are. Vav is launching in Pakistan first, and availability varies by country, account type and partner.

Frequently asked questions about virtual cards for subscriptions and ads#
Can my business have more than one Vav card?
Yes. You can create multiple virtual cards, each with its own spending limit, so you can keep different software subscriptions, ad accounts or suppliers separate.
Is a Vav card a credit card?
No. Vav cards are Visa virtual cards topped up from your business's account balance. You spend what you load. There is no credit and no interest.
What billing address should I use?
Use the billing address shown with your card details in the Vav app, exactly as it appears there. Some merchants check it.
What should we do if a subscription keeps charging after we cancel?
Contact the merchant first. You can also freeze the card instantly in the Vav app, which helps stop further charges while you sort it out.
